To me, childhood is all about play. As adults, we get busy with the day to day and forget to embrace the child inside all of us. You are never too old to play, and the creative spirit is always alive no matter what age. Creating a special space where imagination can be nurtured is what “playrooms” are all about.

Color, mix and match—anything goes in the mind of a child. So why not find inspiration in the free flowing artistic mind of your child? Nothing needs to make sense, and the space can be ever evolving and growing…just like you and your child.

Playrooms can exist anywhere. There are no rules as to what they should be—they should just be.

Honoring the creative output of your child or family can make a room burst with personality. It makes life more interesting and pushes the mind of what exactly is ART?

Create spaces for play with lots of materials and choices—lounge time for creative interactive play or one-of-a-kind nooks for solo time.

The family room can also be merged with the playroom to mix and match with everyday life. Make your playroom fit your lifestyle. Grown-up-sized elements mixed with childlike colors reminds everyone in the whole family that there is always time to play.

One of my favorite things to gather and collect are books. I love the idea of using books as decor. Arranging them and finding the right combination for any room is a talent and requires an artful touch. I never underestimate the “random” arrangement of books on a shelf. The transformation of a room from lifeless to “life-full” can be achieved with the simple art of “book-ing” a room.

Nooks and ladders for books in high spaces creates height in any room.  I love tall bookcases filled with a literary display and other curiosities. Collections creating over time adds personality to the room.

There are so many ways to design book cases. Fitting them into the wall space can be done artfully and offers up variety to any wall space. Filling the spaces on your wall with books and other objects of interest allows the room to fill over time with your own personal style. The shelves offer the room for that process. Books being one of the pieces to the process.

Fashion screams mix and match.. so should your walls. Books mixed with art mixed with photos and more. Photo on the left from the former dominomag.com.

Book madness is always attractive. The accumulation over time in a perfect haphazard way is enchanting and charming. Always…

Like any good traveler, where to lay your tales of adventure? On the walls of your home. Display your lifestyle with books as a backdrop to home.

Graphic statements for home decor inspired by the classic and couture runways. There are so many simple ways to add detail to a room or a look. Silhouettes of black and white are dramatic and bold as a fashion rule and the same applies to the home. Add a rug in a classic pattern or wallpaper your smaller spaces in patterns that command attention.

Take a cue from architectural elements. Stairways that create a direct linear path.  Turned on their side to blend and bend elegantly to create a unique stripe of their own.

Checkered living, mixing patterns with stripes… it all makes sense. The great thing about black and white is that it is easy to create movement with out confusion.

When you’re feeling overwhelmed with all the equipment and other necessities that are required for a new baby, it’s nice to think about how you can create a subtle, soft and serene space to bring your new baby home to. The nursery can be the perfect place to create a nest-like environment that is ideal for sleep and quiet time.

Soft light, simple details and small hints of color are ideal for creating a tranquil sleep space for a baby. The room doesn’t always have to be big and grand; so much can be said with so little.

A color palette that is simple and soft is often a perfect backdrop for the nursery.

Fancy details that are subtle, themes that are simple and neutral accents all keep what could be loud quiet. This room is perfect for play and for sleep.

White is always the perfect neutral. You can never have too much white. Clean, bright and pure is the space that reflects light and happiness.

Simple, elegant and understated is always an option when looking to create neutral rooms. Cream, pale yellow, soft gray, clean white and sophisticated beige are all components of the neutral color wheel. Invite the neutral side of nursery decor into your child’s room.

With the turn of fall and the deep slumber of winter on its way… daybeds come to mind for a quick nap or simply just a rest. What I love about the “daybed” is it offers up so many options in a room. Just sitting pretty or really functional as a true place to slow down, small dreamy beds that are not for the bedroom are great for any room. Fashions boho sets up camp anywhere with original flair and style.

The travelers resting spot made up of  little bits of tapestries and other textiles, or more formal like a beautiful statement from abroad. Carved, shaped or comfy the day bed offers up a moveable sleep place. On the left, designer Michael S. Smith featured in Elle Decor.

Color of the caravan… day beds are fun. Meant to be mixed and matched and a bold statement that says..out of the bedroom and into the main room.

Whether couture or classic, bohemian or resort… get into the “lounge” act with your favorite daybed stop.

Every so often, I like to do a post about rooms that inspire me. When I find my clippings file of my favorite things starting to overflow, I know it’s time to share some of my findings. I know that we’re all designing for our own personal spaces, but sometimes it’s helpful to look outside our comfort zone and discover some new ideas that might prove inspirational. Here are some of mine.

I have always been a little tentative with the color yellow, but I love it here, paired with the pale turquoise and bohemian accents. The room still feels childlike, yet there is room to grow. The personality of the room speaks for itself. Simply delightful.

Another fun idea is to add a little personal touch to the wall space. I love displays that have room for more additions. This photo collage wall is something I want to do in my own home.

This is not a room I would ordinarily gravitate towards, but upon closer examination, I love that so much is going on, yet it all works—the slumber chamber, pom pom lamp shades and bright yellow cabinets. And it’s all mixed with fun wallpaper and brightly colored geometric rugs.

Boats and nautical ideas are always great for boys rooms; I love the simple translation here and the 3D effect it gives to the walls. It’s a nicely executed theme that can easily be over done at times.

And then there is pink. I love pink, and I love that this room is girly without being overly flowery. The addition of a one-of-a-kind, Picasso-like rug adds the element that sets this room apart and tosses all the rules to the wind. Fresh pops of color on the windows add contrast, and the vintage accent chairs mix with the modern so well.

Another Inspiring Room from Vogue

Secret doors, small spaces and childlike elements always add play to a room. This room has all the elements of simple but fun, understated but curious with tons of personality.

Personality is a must when designing a child’s space. Finding inspiration to keep you young at heart is essential. Enjoy!

Falling leaves of orange and autumn offer up a colorful palette for the changing of the season. Between the heaviness of winter and the memory of summers past Fall fades into cool melons, burnt yellows and warm olives..Lovely to celebrate on the runway or your home… Image from ElleDecor.
