Suzanis have always been a favorite on my design list. When I’m looking to infuse some bohemian flavor into a room’s décor, I find myself drawn to the unique colorful motifs and distinct nomadic qualities of suzani prints, and their rich history only adds to their appeal. Indigenous to Central Asia, suzani is the Persian word for ‘needle’, and in the fashion world it refers to these silk embroidered, decorative textiles. Some of the oldest surviving suzanis are from the 18th century, but their beginnings date all the way back to the 15th. (Read more about their history here on House Beautiful.)

Whether using suzanis on a jacket, chair or wall, the boldness of this exotic embroidery style is always eye-catching. These one-of-a-kind designs own the room with their piquant pattern and high contrast color palette. I love the adventurous chair below, from Graham and Green, as well as this suzani-inspired Oscar de la Renta skirt from the fashion and design blog, Luthfimentary.

These vibrantly rich hanging fabrics are from a post on JPM Design, and the stunning red full-length suzani coat is from the lifestyle and design blog My Marrakesh.

If you’re working with a room that’s classic in orientation, try using suzanis as an accent to invigorate and add an eclectic feel. The room below was shot for an article in Elle Decor, as seen on the blog Estate Eclectic. The black velvet boots below, made with vintage Suzani fabric, were originally made by Anthropologie, but can be found here on Lulu’s Vintage.

As an accessory, suzani is the perfect bedscarf, tapestry or tablecloth. The lovely pink bedding and pillows are from interior stylist Rachel Gill’s inspiring blog, La Bella Bungalow. The home office, complete with suzani chairs and wall decor, is an HGTV project, from the interiors blog Daydream Believin’. The chair on the bottom right is an upholstery project’s ‘after’ picture, courtesy of one of our favorite blogs, Design*Sponge. But suzani is not just for interiors, you can enjoy this color motif outside as well. The eclectic patio scene is from a fabulous post on Style Files, check it out for even more Suzani inspirations.

While suzanis are often created with brilliant reds and pinks like the pictures above, there are other color paths that work just as well. It is unusual but stunning to find the pattern in these yellows and other time-faded color schemes. The suzani-inspired Oscar de la Renta skirt is another one from Luthfimentary, and the lovely violet couch is from Elle Decor.
